A Decolonial and Indigenous Approach to Advocacy and Counseling
" As social justice is the central part of mental health and advocacy service, growing interest in the social climate justice movement requires advocates and counselors to expand how we are connected to the land, heritage, roots, historical trauma, and unresolved grief. The understanding of where we are today is the bridge between where we come from and where we are going to. This workshop is aimed to approach innovative and expansive ways of doing advocacy and counseling through a Decolonial and Indigenous perspective of all beings as caregivers and in relationship with the earth, bringing the best practice of building trust in relationships, collaboration, and reciprocity with the land and self while addressing intergenerational trauma, resilience, and healing.”

Cultural betrayal trauma theory examines within-group violence and trauma that violates intracultural trust (Gómez, 2012; 2015; 2016; 2019). Victims of cultural betrayal trauma often report experiencing intracultural pressures, such as denying their experiences and hesitancy to disclosure their violence. This workshop will discuss the sociocultural power dynamics organizations must consider in working with minoritized and historically excluded individuals and communities who have experienced cultural betrayal trauma to facilitate community healing.

Bisexuality and Intimate Partner Violence
Bisexual people experience intimate partner violence at shockingly higher rates than heterosexual, gay, and lesbian people, yet their unique needs are rarely the focus of LGBTQIA+ training for domestic violence and sexual assault advocates. A report sponsored by the CDC found that 61% of bisexual women were stalked, assaulted or raped by an intimate partner in her lifetime, as compared to 44% of lesbian women, and 35% of heterosexual women. This presentation explores why bisexual people are at higher risk of victimization due to common misunderstandings of bisexual identity and fetishization, how their needs differ from other members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and why this specific identity is falling through the cracks of both DV advocates' and LGBTQIA+ organizers' efforts to support victims. Finally, this presentation will highlight an innovative approach taken by a rural advocacy organization to address this problem through grassroots organizing and community partnership.

Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence (SPAN) strives to provide equitable housing for survivors of interpersonal violence to address major housing barriers that our undocumented and immigrant communities face. This workshop will primarily focus on how community organizing is essential to supporting clients in overcoming institutional barriers. We will highlight SPAN’s use of client-directed advocacy with families experiencing systemic oppression and discrimination within federal, state, and local, housing programs, and leasing agencies.

For generations our elders engaged in intentional sharing of traditions, knowledge, and coming together to support each other in healing. Often done by telling stories around a table, in the kitchen, and other communal spaces over sharing food, coffee, tea, and other activities, these traditions helped build community. Inspired by this practice, Cafecitos aims to share that tradition amongst advocates and others in our field to connect, storytell, and build community. Join us to uplift/engage in this tradition through different practices like movement, spiritual healing, theatrical art and altar/ofrenda building.

Centro Paz para Tí was born in 2018 as a result of the impact of Hurricanes María (2017), particularly in rural areas. This space has become a resilient emergency hub, an educational center, and an economic hub for local entrepreneur women. This project pretends to break geographical and economic barriers by addressing gender violence and its intersections with economic justice and accessibility to resources (transport, education, essential needs). During this workshop, we would like to present the development of the center, the role of local women as domestic violence prevention facilitators and protagonists of this project, and their work engaging with the community.

Understanding Trauma Dreams
We have designed the workshop to help advocates working with survivors experiencing disturbing dreams. Participants will gain an understanding the healing that disturbing dreams can bring – and how to look through a healing lens following an emotionally painful dream. We will discuss how dreams are varied by time, culture and personal experience. This workshop provides not only a general understanding of what dreams mean, but also how dreams can help the survivor heal from trauma.

This workshop will go beyond the basics of advocating for LGBTQIA survivors and explore the issue of medical violence. LGBTQIA people are disproportionately at risk for experiencing violence in medical settings. Advocates must understand this issue to effectively work with LGBTQIA survivors. We will examine the epidemic of medical violence against the community, and its relation to sexual violence. Participants will develop advocacy strategies for LGBTQIA medical violence survivors and promoting positive healthcare experiences.

“I’m pregnant and there’s no one else I can talk to”: How advocates can support with reproductive choices
With the recent restrictive abortion laws passed in Texas and around the country, sexual and domestic violence advocates are often the only professionals able to provide non-judgmental, medically accurate information on both sexuality as well as reproductive options. In this workshop, we will discuss why it is essential for advocates to provide accurate information on abortion services and to be able to reference and signpost abortion access, brainstorm ways to ensure that we provide accurate information and roleplay interacting with clients who need abortion services.

Grooming In Gaming
My workshop will address the needs and challenges of youth in the online gaming community. It will focus on the prevalence of gaming among youth, the different and ever-changing platforms utilized, the challenges of reporting cyber-crimes and how to communicate with young adults and children of grooming and safety measures when playing games online. There will also be an emphasis on the increase of gaming since COVID and the prevalence of gaming among rural youth.

We will explore neurodivergent survivors’ unique experiences of abuse and the systemic ableism that thrives within the field of victim advocacy. Drawing on the work of autistic liberation activists and lived experience, this workshop will actively challenge the “Pathological Paradigm” which is used to discredit and disadvantage neurodivergent people. Advocates will learn how intertwined systemic oppression contributes to neuro-normative ableism within organizations, and will unpack the many ways all of us contribute to on-going harm to members of the neurodivergent community.
